Coftie: Slower, softer, more intentional travel

Not every escape need be wild. Some are simply well-nestled — a way of travelling that celebrates connection, comfort and meaningful exploration in the heart of the Scottish Highlands.

A philosophy born from the Highlands

Coftie is The Lovat's own expression of an ancient Highland way of being — a lifestyle rooted in the Scottish tradition of coorie, meaning to nestle, to snuggle in, to feel deeply at ease. Think of it as Scotland's answer to hygge: an invitation to slow your pace, soften your gaze and allow the landscape to do what it has always done, long before the world grew so busy.

At its heart, Coftie is about the quality of presence. It asks you to notice the warmth of a fire after a bracing lochside walk, the satisfaction of a single unhurried meal. It is travel as a form of gentle restoration — a counter to the relentless pace of modern life, offered through the particular magic of Loch Ness and the surrounding Highlands.

The Lovat has made Coftie its founding ethos. From the moment you arrive, you'll find a hotel that moves with the seasons — beckoning each one in with imaginative and whimsical touches, from foraged details in the dining room to the flickering log fires in the lounge. Nothing here is incidental. Everything is arranged to help you feel exactly where you are.

The Hotel: A Highland home for the Coftie spirit

Settled on the historic site of the Kilwhimen Barracks on the banks of Loch Ness, The Lovat is Scotland's only four-star hotel on the loch — a beautifully restored Victorian building where old character and considered modern comfort exist in quiet harmony.

Each of our 29 rooms is a singular retreat. Antique furnishings, whimsical seasonal touches and views across the loch or garden create spaces that feel genuinely lived-in rather than contrived. Hypoallergenic bedding in Egyptian cotton, Nespresso machines, bathrobes and thoughtful amenities mean that comfort is never compromised.

Downstairs, the Waypoint Bar invites you to enjoy some of the best English wines, carefully created cocktails and mocktails infused by the seasons, and spirits from local distilleries. All to be enjoyed either outside complimented by a backdrop of the surrounding hills or the log fires in the lounges are always close at hand. The grand piano sits in a room that invites lingering — not as a scheduled activity, but simply as an invitation to be still. Most importantly, a team that genuinely cares: these are the details that make Coftie feel real rather than aspirational.

One of the greenest hotels in Scotland, The Lovat's relationship with the natural world is not decorative. It underpins everything — from how we source our food to how we move through the seasons. Guests are drawn by the romance of the setting.

The Restaurant: Station Road — where Coftie reaches the table

If Coftie is a philosophy, Station Road is where it becomes a meal. Our destination restaurant — awarded three AA Rosettes and listed in the Michelin Guide — translates the landscape directly onto the plate. Head Chef Sean Kelly leads a kitchen that moves with the seasons, drawing from nature's larder to create outstanding gastronomy that is quietly, unmistakably Highland.

Every dish reflects the changing colours, flavours and aromas of the year as it unfolds around Loch Ness. The Mòr tasting menu is a full journey through the landscape — an extended, unhurried sequence of courses that embodies Coftie in its truest sense: there is nowhere else to be, and nothing to do but pay attention.

We ask that guests wishing to dine at Station Road check availability in advance, as the restaurant operates on selected evenings. To book is to mark a moment in your stay — an occasion rather than an afterthought.

Your Coftie escape awaits on the shores of Loch Ness

Whether you arrive for a single night or settle in for longer, The Lovat will meet you exactly where you are and gently ask you to slow down. That is the promise of Coftie — and it is already here, waiting.
