Kilwhimen Barracks

1729

The Lovat Hotel & Restaurant stands on the site of Kilwhimen Barracks, one of four built in 1718. A 34 by 4 meter portion of the west curtain wall remains on the Lovat grounds. The wall is pierced with a central gateway and ten gun embrasures, emphasising the importance of the original fort. The monumental wall is of national importance as it is a part of the original Hanoverian forts (the others being at Bernara, Ruthven and Inversnaid) built to pacify the Highlanders after the 1715 and 1719 Jacobite risings. Kilwhimen was built in a strategic location mid-way along the Great Glen. You can connect back to this time in history when you stay here and imagine the people who once occupied the fort.

1745

Bonnie Prince Charlie was in the barracks before he ordered the bombardment of the later Abbey Fort, where the present day Fort Augustus Abbey now stands.
